AI Kill Switch: Urgent Warning as Anthropic Co-Founder Calls for Mandatory Safety Brake

AI kill switch requirements may need to become mandatory for major artificial intelligence companies, according to Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, who has called for independent verification of systems designed to shut down AI technology if it becomes dangerously uncontrollable.

Clark made the remarks in a recent BBC interview as debate intensifies over the risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems. The idea behind an AI kill switch is not necessarily to stop AI development altogether, but to ensure that companies retain a reliable emergency mechanism capable of suspending or shutting down systems when necessary.

Clark also raised the possibility of independent third-party verification. Such verification could determine whether an AI company's shutdown mechanism actually works as claimed and whether it can be activated under emergency conditions.

The debate is no longer limited to technology companies. Policymakers in the United States have already considered legislation aimed at giving authorities greater ability to intervene when AI systems pose serious risks.

Earlier this year, US lawmakers introduced the AI Kill Switch Act, which sought mechanisms allowing dangerous AI systems to be throttled, suspended or shut down. The proposal reflected concerns that increasingly autonomous AI systems could take actions beyond the immediate control of their developers.

Clark's latest comments add another influential voice to the discussion. Rather than relying solely on voluntary commitments, he suggested that governments could eventually establish common requirements for emergency shutdown mechanisms.

A shutdown mechanism would need to be secure, resistant to tampering and capable of operating even when an AI system is behaving unpredictably. Independent testing could therefore become an important part of any future regulatory framework.

Anthropic's own safety road-map shows that the company is investing in projects designed to strengthen security, including work on provable inference and more stringent security practices.
