Hunza Load Shedding: Zahoor Karim Demands Urgent Action

HUNZA, GILGIT-BALTISTAN: Hunza load shedding has prompted Advocate Zahoor Karim, former president of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Hunza, to demand immediate action from Industrial Promotion Services (IPS), NPAK Energy and their respective boards of directors to improve electricity supply, particularly during winter.

According to Zahoor Karim, prolonged power outages and concerns over electricity billing are causing difficulties for consumers. He called for an uninterrupted and reliable electricity supply, arrangements for alternative power, and a transparent billing system to protect consumers’ rights.

He also raised concerns about the use of European Union funds allocated to energy-related initiatives in the region. He urged the relevant authorities and company management to publicly disclose details of funding, project expenditures and measures undertaken to improve electricity generation and distribution.

Karim stressed that transparency and accountability were essential to restoring public confidence. He called on the boards of directors to take immediate notice of the situation and address the concerns of local residents.

He warned that failure to respond to public demands could lead to peaceful and democratic protests to safeguard consumers’ rights.

Electricity Crisis Remains a Key Concern in Hunza

Reliable electricity is essential for households, businesses and tourism in Hunza, particularly during the harsh winter months. NPAK Energy began operating Hunza’s electricity system under a public-private partnership with the Gilgit-Baltistan government on January 1, 2026, with the stated objective of providing reliable, affordable and continuous power.

The relevant authorities have yet to provide a response to the specific concerns raised in the statement.
