Gilgit-Baltistan Development Projects: PM Orders Urgent Action
Gilgit-Baltistan development projects have received renewed attention after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed federal ministries and departments to accelerate ongoing schemes, ensure timely funding and remove administrative obstacles to their completion.
The prime minister issued these instructions while chairing a review meeting in Islamabad on Friday, October 30. Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain also attended the meeting.
According to the official briefing, the meeting reviewed progress on hydro-power, infrastructure and solar energy initiatives, alongside measures to strengthen counter-terrorism capabilities and expand digital infrastructure across the region.
A major focus was the federal government's 100-megawatt solar energy project, which Shehbaz Sharif directed the authorities to complete at the earliest. The initiative is expected to help address Gilgit-Baltistan's persistent electricity challenges and improve energy availability for local communities.
The meeting also examined progress on the Naltar Power Project. The prime minister instructed relevant ministries and institutions to ensure timely fund releases, improve coordination and remove implementation hurdles on a priority basis.
A committee established in July 2026 presented its report outlining the status of federal development schemes, obstacles affecting implementation and recommendations for timely completion.
Shehbaz Sharif further called for regular monitoring of development initiatives, particularly energy-related projects, to ensure that residents benefit from them without unnecessary delays.
The meeting also paid tribute to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan ahead of November 1, which commemorates the region's liberation from Dogra rule in 1947 and its subsequent accession to Pakistan. The prime minister is expected to visit the region on the occasion.
Timely implementation remains the key challenge
While the federal government's renewed instructions highlight the importance of development in Gilgit-Baltistan, residents will ultimately assess progress through practical improvements in electricity supply, infrastructure, digital connectivity and essential public services.
For communities across the region, timely completion, transparent implementation and consistent monitoring will be crucial to turning development commitments into tangible benefits.
