“Lafo Kesar’s Marriage to Lamoh Brangmo”

According to the “Ling Yol” tradition, one night all the people—including the richest man, “Phyokpo Takhmospa” (a landlord in the human world and Lamoh Brangmo’s father)—and his seven daughters went to “Lchangra Chhogo” (a large communal gathering place found in every village of the Baltistan and Tibet region. It is a central spot in the village surrounded by willow trees to provide cool shade; sometimes there is also a water tank there. After a day’s work, all the villagers gather here to chat. All village matters are discussed here. Lchangra always plays a very important role in village life), where they planned to enjoy a week-long night of music. All men, women, nursing infants, and the elderly who could walk gathered for this week-long festival. Everyone danced until they were exhausted. Everyone ate good food. At the end of the first night’s entertainment, an announcement was made for the next morning: in the final session of music and dance, Phyokpo Takhmospa would marry off his daughters, and anyone interested should assemble at Lchangra Chhogo so that his daughters could choose their life partners.

The evening before the Somber (a contest to win a girl for marriage), according to custom, all men and women, children and the elderly, and many young men—the heroes and princes of their tribes who wished to marry Phyokpo Takhmospa’s daughters—arrived and took their seats. Then a musical program was held, and by midnight, when people were tired, the pre-wedding ceremony ended and the crowd dispersed. While people were busy dancing, Ghot Pamchung killed a pregnant donkey, took out its foetus, and hid it in his dirty clothes. Phyokpo Takhmospa’s daughters, who were sleeping for the night in a nearby house, were watched by Ghot Pamchung, who first made sure the girls were in deep sleep; then he placed the “donkey foetus” in the bed of the eldest daughter and hid himself behind the door of that room. When morning came, the eldest daughter woke up and felt something wet against her body. She found something like a fallen infant. She thought, “I will take it and try to throw it outside.” Suddenly she saw Ghot Pamchung peeping inside. She thought the mischievous Ghot Pamchung was at the door; he would stop me and search me, and if I throw it inside the cave, it will bring shame upon me. So the girl thought for a while, then placed the baby in her sister’s bed.

In the same way, all six girls passed the baby from one sister’s bed to another, until finally it reached Lamoh Brangmo’s bed. She woke up and saw that none of her sisters were with her, but a fallen baby was beside her. She also saw Ghot Pamchung peeping in through the door. She thought, “People will say I gave birth to an illegitimate child. That bastard Ghot Pamchung will tell everyone about it!” When she realized nothing could be done now, she calmly hid the baby under her arm and slowly began to leave the house. As she approached Ghot Pamchung, he grabbed her, took the baby in his hand, and shouted, “O hohoho! Lamoh Brangmo, daughter of Phyoko Takhmospa, has defiled the house because she has given birth to an illegitimate child in it.” Lamoh Brangmo replied, “O Ghot Pamchung! I beg you! Please do not tell anyone about this! Today is Friday, our Somber day. I will marry you.” Ghot Pamchung made her swear an oath, then released her, but kept the baby.

When the first part of the day had passed, hundreds of men, women, children, and the elderly gathered in a large circle at Lchangra Chhogo and began making noise. Several princes and young men from nearby areas also came in their finest clothes, hoping that one of them might be chosen by Phyokpo Takhmospa as a life partner for his daughter. They sat on stone seats specially made for the candidates. Phyokpo Takhmospa, his wife, and his seven daughters also arrived in their best attire and sat on a stone platform from which the entire crowd in Lchangra Chhogo could be seen.

Once Phyokpo Takhmospa and his family were comfortably seated on the platform, an eighteen-member musical ensemble began to play music so loud that not only did the earth tremble, but the sound reached the heavens. Then the eldest daughter stood up, came down, and began to dance; after spinning a few times and looking over the candidates, she finally chose one and sat in his lap. The crowd cheered in excitement.

In the same way, five more girls danced, each choosing one for life and sitting in his lap.

Now it was the turn of the chief’s youngest and last daughter, Lamoh Brangmo. She was not only considered the chief’s most beloved daughter, but people also said she possessed heavenly beauty. She too came down and began to dance. As she started dancing, saliva began to drip from everyone’s mouths, and every young man wished she would come and sit in his lap. At that time, Ghot Pamchung was sitting nearby on a mound of earth, so he could see everything clearly.

When Lamoh Brangmo chose a young man and ran to sit in his lap, Ghot Pamchung shouted, “Oho ho oho ho!” Ghot Pamchung was screaming in such a loud and terrifying voice that everyone, even Lamoh Brangmo, turned to look at him.

She saw the foetus (baby) in Ghot Pamchung’s hands, and just as she was about to resume her dance and sit in someone’s lap again, Ghot Pamchung repeated the same act.

Both times, all the spectators, except one foolish and ugly boy, understood nothing from this foolish act, but Lamoh Brangmo’s heart sank within her chest.

The third time Lamoh Brangmo was about to sit in the lap of her chosen young man, Ghot Pamchung again performed the same act and waved the baby. Everyone in the assembly could see it clearly. Lamoh Brangmo’s heart broke; she became extremely despondent. She ran to Ghot Pamchung and fell at his feet. All the people cried out in joy:

“Oh! Ghot Pamchung has won Lamoh Brangmo—such a beautiful girl—as his wife.” According to custom,
Ghot Pamchung brought her to his home. But Lamoh Brangmo was broken in heart and soul and unable to accept the ugly jester, and day by day her condition worsened. She would not even allow Ghot Pamchung to come near her as a husband, and each time she would make a loud noise to prevent Ghot Pamchung from having her, so that someone would come and see what had happened to Lamoh Brangmo.

Lamoh Brangmo would take the household livestock to graze in the nearby hills to spend most of her time away from her ugly husband. One day, Ghot Pamchung decided he would follow her and take the opportunity to have her. He found his wife sitting on a rock in the hills of Thingus (a village in Roundu), unaware of her husband’s intentions. Ghot Pamchung suddenly grabbed Lamoh Brangmo, dragged her down from the rock to the ground. Lamoh Brangmo cried out for help, but in vain, and Ghot Pamchung took advantage of her with all his strength. She became unconscious for a while; however, when she regained consciousness, she slowly led the herd back home. This act further increased her dislike for her husband. One day, Ghot Pamchung said to her, “If you cannot accept me, it is better that I die rather than live like this. I will jump from the rock into the river and drown myself.” Lamoh Brangmo remained silent, and before her eyes, he jumped into the “Senge Chhu” (Indus River). The swift currents carried him away, and finally, with a sense of freedom from him, she returned home. But when she entered inside, she found Ghot Pamchung sitting by the stove. She was so deeply disappointed to see the ugly jester still alive. She made a decision and again went to the rock and jumped into the river (Indus) herself. Ghot Pamchung caught her and said, “If looking at me is so painful for you, I will kill myself for you.” He jumped from the top of the rock, and before Lamoh Brangmo’s eyes, his body shattered into pieces. Seeing this, Lamoh Brangmo felt satisfied and returned home again. But when she entered her house, she once again found Ghot Pamchung sitting there. For Lamoh Brangmo, circumstances were worsening, but she was utterly helpless……

جب دن کا پہلا حصہ گزر گیا، تو سینکڑوں مرد، عورتیں، بچے اور بوڑھے ایک بڑے دائرے میں لچانگرا چھوگو میں اکٹھے ہو کر شور مچانے لگے۔ آس پاس کے علاقوں کے کئی شہزادے اور نوجوان بھی اپنی بہترین پوشاک میں اس امید کے ساتھ آئے کہ شاید ان میں سے کسی کو فیوکپو تاکھموسپا کی بیٹی کو اپنی جیون ساتھی منتخب کر لے۔ امیدواروں کے لیے خاص طور پر بنائے گئے پتھر کے نشستوں پر وہ بیٹھ گئے۔ فیوکپو تاکھموسپا، اس کی بیوی اور اس کی سات بیٹیاں بھی اپنی بہترین پوشاکوں میں پہنچے اور پتھر کے چبوترے پر بیٹھ گئے، جہاں سے پوری لچانگرا چھوگو میں موجود ہجوم کو دیکھی جا سکتی تھی۔
 جب فیوکپو تاکھموسپا اور اس کا خاندان آرام سے چبوترے پر بیٹھ گئے، اٹھارہ رکنی موسیقی بجانے والا گروہ نے موسیقی بجانا شروع کیا جس کی آواز اتنی بلند تھی کہ نہ صرف زمین کانپ اٹھی، بلکہ آسمان تک بھی پہنچی۔ چنانچہ، سب سے بڑی بیٹی اٹھی، نیچے آئی اور ناچنا شروع کیا اور چند بار گھوم کر امیدواروں پر نگاہ ڈالی اور آخرکار ایک کو منتخب کیا اور اس کی گود میں بیٹھ گئی۔ لوگ جوش میں چلانے لگے۔

اب باری تھی اس رئیس کی سب سے چھوٹی اور آخری بیٹی لہمو برنگمو کی۔ اسے نہ صرف رئیس کی سب سے پیاری بیٹی سمجھا جاتا تھا، بلکہ لوگ کہتے تھے کہ اس کے پاس آسمانی حُسن ہے۔ وہ بھی نیچے آئی اور ناچنا شروع کیا۔ جب اس نے ناچنا شروع کیا تو سب کے منہ سے رال ٹپکنے لگی اور ہر نوجوان چاہتا تھا کہ وہ آ کر اس کی گود میں بیٹھ جائے۔ اس وقت غوٹ پامچونگ قریب ہی مٹی کے ڈھیر پر بیٹھا تھا، اس لیے وہ سب کچھ صاف دیکھ سکتا تھا۔
جب لہمو برنگمو نے ایک نوجوان کو منتخب کیا اور اس کی گود میں بیٹھنے کے لیے دوڑی، تو غوٹ پامچونگ چلایا: "اوہو ہو اوہو ہو!" غوٹ پامچونگ اتنی بلند اور ہولناک آواز میں چیخ رہا تھا کہ سب، حتیٰ کہ لہمو برنگمو بھی اس کی طرف دیکھنے لگے۔
اس نے غوٹ پامچونگ کے ہاتھوں میں جنین (بچہ) دیکھا، اور وہ دوبارہ اپنا رقص شروع کر کے پھر کسی کی گود میں بیٹھنے کے قریب تھی، غوٹ پامچونگ نے پھر وہی حرکت کی۔
دونوں دفعہ تمام تماشائی سوائے ایک بیوقوف اور بدصورت لڑکے کی اس احمقانہ حرکت کے کچھ نہ سمجھ سکے، لیکن لہمو برنگمو کا دل اس کی سینے میں ڈوب گیا۔
تیسری بار جب لہمو برنگمو اپنے منتخب نوجوان کی گود میں بیٹھنے جا رہی تھی، غوٹ پامچونگ نے پھر وہی حرکت کی اور بچے کو لہرا دیا۔ ہر کوئی اس مجلس میں اسے صاف دیکھ سکتا تھا۔ لہمو برنگمو کا دل ٹوٹ گیا، وہ بہت زیادہ مایوس ہوئی۔ وہ غوٹ پامچونگ کے پاس دوڑ کر آئی اور اس کی ٹانگوں پر گر گئی۔ سب لوگ خوشی سے رو پڑے:
"او! غوٹ پامچونگ نے لہمو برنگمو کو جیت لیا - اتنی خوبصورت لڑکی - اپنی بیوی بنانے کے لئے۔" رسم کے مطابق،
غوٹ پامچونگ اسے اپنے گھر لے آیا۔ لیکن لہمو برنگمو دل و جان سے ٹوٹ چکی تھی اور بدصورت مسخرے کو قبول کرنے سے قاصر تھی، اور دن بہ دن اس کی طبیعت مزید خراب ہوتی گئی۔ وہ غوٹ پامچونگ کو شوہر کے طور پر اپنے قریب آنے کی اجازت بھی نہیں دیتی تھی اور ہر بار شور مچا کر غوٹ پامچونگ کو اسے حاصل کرنے سے روکتی تھی، تاکہ کوئی آ کر دیکھے کہ لہمو برنگمو کو کیا ہوا ہے۔
لہمو برنگمو گھر کے مویشیوں کو چرانے کے لیے قریبی پہاڑیوں پر لے جاتی تھی تاکہ اپنا زیادہ تر وقت اپنے بدصورت شوہر سے دور رہ سکے۔ ایک دن غوٹ پامچونگ نے فیصلہ کیا کہ وہ اس کا پیچھا کرے گا اور موقع پا کر اسے حاصل کرے گا۔ اس نے اپنی بیوی کو تھنگوس (روندو کا ایک گاوں) کی پہاڑیوں میں ایک چٹان پر بیٹھے ہوئے پایا، جب کہ وہ اپنے شوہر کی نیتوں سے بے خبر تھی۔ غوٹ پامچونگ نے اچانک لہمو برنگمو کو پکڑ لیا اور چٹان سے گھسیٹ کر زمین پر ڈال دیا۔ لہمو برنگمو نے مدد کے لیے چیخ و پکار کی، مگر بے سود رہی اور غوٹ پامچونگ نے پوری طاقت کے ساتھ اس سے فائدہ اٹھایا۔ وہ کچھ دیر کے لیے بے ہوش ہو گئی، بہرحال جب اسے ہوش آیا، تو وہ آہستہ آہستہ ریوڑ کو گھر کی طرف لے گئی۔ اس عمل نے اس کے شوہر کے لیے اس کی ناپسندیدگی کو مزید بڑھا دیا۔ ایک دن، غوٹ پامچونگ نے اس سے کہا: "اگر تم مجھے قبول نہیں کر سکتیں تو بہتر ہے کہ میں مر جاؤں، بجائے اس کے کہ میں اس طرح زندہ رہوں۔ میں چٹان سے دریا میں چھلانگ لگا کر خود کو ڈبو دوں گا۔" لہمو برنگمو خاموش رہی، اور اس کی آنکھوں کے سامنے، وہ "سنگے چھو" (دریا سندھ) میں کود گیا۔ تیز لہریں اسے بہا لے گئیں، اور آخر کار اس سے آزاد ہونے کے احساس کے ساتھ، وہ اپنے گھر واپس آ گئی۔ لیکن جب وہ اندر داخل ہوئی، تو اس نے غوٹ پامچونگ کو چولہے کے پاس بیٹھا ہوا پایا۔ اسے یہ دیکھ کر اتنی گہری مایوسی ہوئی کہ وہ بدصورت مسخرہ ابھی تک زندہ ہے۔ اس نے فیصلہ کیا اور دوبارہ چٹان پر جا کے خود دریا (سندھ) میں چھلانگ لگا دی۔ غوٹ پامچونگ نے اسے پکڑ لیا اور کہا: "اگر تمہارے لیے مجھ پر نظر ڈالنا اتنا تکلیف دہ ہے تو میں تمہارے لیے خود کو مار ڈالوں گا۔" وہ چٹان کی چوٹی سے کود گیا اور لہمو برنگمو کی آنکھوں کے سامنے اس کا جسم ٹکڑے ٹکڑے ہو گیا۔ یہ دیکھ کر لہمو برنگمو مطمئن ہو گئی اور دوبارہ اپنے گھر واپس آ گئی۔ لیکن جب وہ اپنے گھر میں داخل ہوئی تو اس نے پھر غوٹ پامچونگ کو وہاں بیٹھا ہوا پایا۔ لہمو برنگمو کے لیے حالات مزید بگڑ رہے تھے لیکن وہ بالکل بے بس تھی۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔
