"The Creation of Ling"

Once upon a time, there was a rural landlord named "Khangchik Michik" 
(a term in the Balti language referring to someone who lives alone in a solitary household); 
he was among the wealthiest men of that era. Despite his vast wealth, he had no permanent labourers of his own; instead, 
he would hire villagers to work on his land.
And they used to receive their wages in the form of grain. Consequently, the villagers decided to lease their land to the *Jagirdar* for cultivation and accept grain in return. 
The *Jagirdar* told them that he would first consult the "Lama" (in Balti, a Lama is someone who performs duties related to worship, religious instruction, 
and spiritual guidance—much like a *Maulvi* or religious scholar among Muslims) 
and would only then be able to convey his decision to them.
In those days, the Lama was the only wise man in the land. He had always helped Khangchak Mechak and had resolved many of his problems in the past. 
So, the landlord went to see him and, after recounting the whole story, asked for his guidance. 
After listening carefully, the Lama suggested that Khangchak Mechak should not cultivate the people's land; instead, he should hire the villagers to work on his own land for daily wages. 
In this way, the barren land would be cultivated, and the villagers would be able to support their families. The landlord returned, and the people gathered to hear his decision. 
Khangchak Mechak proposed that the villagers work on his barren lands to make them cultivable, offering to pay them in proportion to their daily labor. 
The people unanimously agreed to these terms and began the work. Within just a few days, 
they had prepared twenty-four "Khal-sa" of cultivable land for Khangchak Mechak (in Balti, a "Khal-sa" refers to a plot of land capable of being sown with twenty kilograms of wheat).

By then, the sowing season had already passed, and the crops of others were already flourishing. This situation worried Khangchak Michak, so he went to the Lama once again. 
The Lama predicted that the newly prepared land would yield a good wheat harvest. Consequently, during the next planting season, Khangchak Michak sowed wheat on his land. 
Although he made every possible effort to ensure a good harvest, nothing grew.
The seeds failed to sprout. By this time, the crops in the neighboring fields were nearing maturity. Once again, the landowner went to the Lama for help. 
The Lama advised him to apply more manure and water the field regularly. Eight days later, Khangchak Mechak informed the Lama that there were no signs of growth anywhere in the field where he had sown the wheat. 
The Lama decided to accompany Khangchak Mechak to the fields to see if his concern was justified.
While wandering in search of something growing in the fields, he noticed that some seeds had sprouted in a particular spot. 
The Lama advised the farmer to water that specific area and add more fertilizer. Khangchak Mechak followed the Lama's instructions, and within a few days, one of the plants grew into a massive tree with a trunk towering toward the sky. 
His curiosity piqued, he rushed to the Lama to report this astonishing event...

ایک دفعہ کا ذکر ہے کہ ایک دیہی جاگیردار تھا جس کا نام "کھانگچِک مِیچک" (بلتی زبان میں ایسے شخص کو کہا جاتا ہے جو اکیلا ہو اور اکیلے گھر میں رہتا ہو) تھا، جو اس زمانے کے امیر ترین لوگوں میں سے ایک تھا۔ 
اپنی دولت کے باوجود، اس کے اپنے کوئی مزدور نہیں تھے۔ بلکہ وہ دیہاتیوں کو اپنی زمین پر کام کرنے کے لیے مزدوری پر رکھتا تھا، 
اور انہیں اجرت اناج کی صورت میں ملتی تھی۔ 
لہٰذا دیہاتیوں نے فیصلہ کیا کہ جاگیردار کو اپنی زمین کاشت کرنے کے لیے کرایہ پر دے دیں، 
اور اس کے بدلے میں اناج قبول کر لیں۔ جاگیردار نے انہیں بتایا کہ پہلے وہ "لاما" (بلتی میں لاما وہ شخص ہوتا ہے جو عبادت، تعلیمِ مذہب، اور روحانی رہنمائی کا کام کرتا ہے، 
بالکل ویسے جیسے مسلمانوں میں مولوی یا عالمِ دین ہوتا ہے) سے مشورہ کرے گا، اس کے بعد ہی انہیں اپنے ارادے بتا سکے گا۔
ان دنوں، لاما ملک کا واحد دانا آدمی تھا۔ وہ ہمیشہ کھانگچک میچک کی مدد کرتا رہا تھا، اور ماضی میں اس کے کئی مسائل حل کیے تھے۔ 
چنانچہ جاگیردار اس سے ملنے گیا اور پوری کہانی سنانے کے بعد اس سے رہنمائی کی درخواست کی۔ غور سے سننے کے بعد، لاما نے تجویز دی کہ کھانگچک میچک لوگوں کی زمین  کاشت نہ کرے۔ 
اس کے بجائے، اسے چاہیے کہ وہ دیہاتیوں کو اپنی زمین پر روزانہ اجرت پر کام پر رکھے۔ اس طرح بنجر زمین بھی کاشت ہو جائے گی اور دیہاتی اپنے خاندانوں کی کفالت کر سکیں گے۔
جاگیردار واپس آیا، لوگ اس کے فیصلے کو سننے کے لیے جمع ہوئے۔ 

کھانگچک میچک نے تجویز دی کہ دیہاتی اس کی بنجر زمینوں میں کام کریں
تاکہ انہیں قابل کاشت بنایا جا سکے۔ اس کے بدلے میں وہ انہیں ان کی روزانہ کی محنت کے مطابق رقم ادا کرے گا۔ لوگوں نے اس شرط پر متفقہ طور پر رضامندی ظاہر کی اور کام شروع کر دیا۔ 
چند ہی دنوں میں انہوں نے کھانگچِک مِیچک کے لیے چوبیس "کھل صاع" (بلتی میں کھل صاع سے مراد وہ زمین کا ٹکڑا ہے جس میں بیس کلو گندم بوئی جا سکتی ہے) کاشت کی زمین تیار کر لی۔
 اس وقت تک فصل کاشت کرنے کا وقت گزر چکا تھا، اور دوسروں کی فصلیں پہلے ہی اچھی ثابت ہو چکی تھیں۔ اس بات نے کھانگچک میچک کو پریشان کر دیا
۔ لہٰذا وہ ایک بار پھر لاما کے پاس گیا۔ 
لاما نے پیش گوئی کی کہ نئی تیار شدہ زمین پر گندم کی اچھی پیداوار ہوگی۔ چنانچہ اگلے کاشتکاری پر کھانگچک میچک نے اپنی زمین پر گندم کاشت کی۔ اگرچہ اس نے اچھی پیداوار کے لئے ہر ممکن کوشش کی، لیکن کچھ بھی نہیں اُگا۔ 
بیج اگنے میں ناکام رہا۔ اس وقت تک دوسروں کے کھیتوں میں فصلیں پکنے کے قریب تھیں۔ ایک بار پھر زمیندار مدد کے لئے لاما کے پاس گیا۔
لاما نے اسے مزید کھاد ڈالنے اور باقاعدگی سے پانی دینے کا مشورہ دیا۔ 
آٹھ دن بعد، کھانگچک میچک نے لاما کو اطلاع دی کہ پورے کھیت میں جہاں اس نے گندم بوئی تھی، کہیں بھی اگنے کے آثار نہیں ہیں۔ لاما نے فیصلہ کیا کہ وہ کھانگچک میچک کے ساتھ کھیتوں میں جائے گا تاکہ دیکھ سکے کہ اس کا خدشہ جائز ہے یا نہیں۔ 
جب وہ کھیت میں اگنے والی کسی چیز کی تلاش میں گھوم رہے تھے تو انہوں نے دیکھا کہ ایک جگہ کچھ بیج اگ آئے ہیں۔ لاما نے زمیندار کو مشورہ دیا کہ وہ اس مخصوص جگہ کو پانی دے اور مزید کھاد ڈالے۔
کھانگچک میچک نے لاما کی ہدایت کے مطابق کام کیا، اور چند ہی دنوں میں ان پودوں میں سے ایک بڑا درخت بن گیا جس کا تنا آسمان کی طرف بلند ہوا۔
اس سے اس کی تجسس میں اضافہ ہوا اور وہ اس حیران کن واقعے کی اطلاع دینے کے لئے لاما کے پاس دوڑا۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔
