Chilas Hospital Upgrade: Better Care | Shyok Times

Urgent Healthcare Upgrades Ordered at Chilas Hospital by GB CM Amjad Hussain

CHILAS — In a major move to bolster regional public health infrastructure, Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain has directed health department officials to immediately execute comprehensive Chilas Hospital healthcare upgrades at the Regional Headquarters (RHQ) Hospital in Chilas. The directive aims to ensure that local residents receive prompt, dignified, and quality medical facilities without having to travel long distances for primary and emergency medical care.

During a detailed personal inspection of the medical facility, CM Amjad Hussain evaluated operational readiness across several wards, specialized units, and administrative blocks. Recognizing the growing pressure on maternal healthcare services in the district, the Chief Minister issued immediate orders for the construction of a dedicated additional labor ward within the women’s block.

Directives Issued for RHQ Hospital Chilas Improvement

During the visit, the Chief Minister highlighted several key areas requiring immediate administrative and structural intervention:

  • Expansion of Maternal Care Facilities: Immediate construction of a new, fully equipped labor ward in the women's block to handle high patient loads safely.
  • Medicine Availability: Strict instructions to ensure an uninterrupted supply of free life-saving medicines and essential clinical consumables.
  • Staff Duty Adherence: Zero-tolerance policy regarding doctor absenteeism, ensuring round-the-clock availability of specialist physicians and nursing staff.
  • Sanitation and Hygiene Standards: Enhanced daily cleanliness protocols across all inpatient wards, emergency rooms, and surgical theaters.

"Access to reliable, high-quality medical treatment is a basic right of every citizen in Gilgit-Baltistan. The state will utilize all available resources to equip our regional hospitals with modern diagnostic tools and adequate medical staff," stated Chief Minister Amjad Hussain while interacting with medical staff and patients during his tour.

Strategic Importance of Healthcare Modernization in Diamer

The Regional Headquarters Hospital in Chilas serves as the critical primary and secondary healthcare hub for the entire Diamer District and neighboring transit corridors along the Karakoram Highway. With a rapidly growing local population and a high volume of daily outpatient visits, the existing infrastructure has faced severe capacity constraints.

Local community leaders and civil society representatives have welcomed the Chief Minister's proactive visit, noting that expanding the maternal healthcare block will significantly reduce high-risk transfers to major medical centers in Gilgit or Islamabad.

Key Priorities for Health Sector Advancement in GB

To maintain long-term stability across regional public health networks, the Gilgit-Baltistan government is focusing on three main structural goals:

  1. Upgrading Diagnostic Capabilities: Installing modern ultrasound, X-ray, and pathology laboratory equipment across district-level facilities.
  2. Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Focus: Prioritizing specialized neonatal and obstetric units to lower regional infant and maternal mortality rates.
  3. Emergency Response Enhancement: Strengthening ambulance services and trauma care capability along major highways in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Official sources confirmed that executive directives issued during the Chilas inspection have been dispatched to the Secretary of Health and the Deputy Commissioner of Diamer for immediate compliance and weekly progress reporting.
