Kesar – Son of God

Chapter (Yuldak) No. 5

“Lafu Kesar’s Expedition to the North”

Episode Number.: 17

Malda Brumskid hid Lafo Kesar inside a container, beneath wool and spinning wheels. At that very moment, her husband entered the palace in a fit of anger. At his request, she performed a strange ritual with the book before handing it to him.
Dre Shima Rgyal looked inside the book and then said, “O Malda Brumskid, my Lafo Kesar had made an agreement with King Ling Yul that whoever entered the other’s territory would be killed. We ogres are not particularly wise or intelligent. It is possible that Lafo Kesar has already entered my territory and is planning to kill me. The book says that he has come from his own country and entered my territory, but he has become trapped in a forest of wood. Therefore, until he manages to cross that forest, I will return to the desert, eat some more, and then come back.”
The next morning, the giant once again set off toward the desert. Lafo Kesar emerged from the container, and for a while, he and Malda Brumskid enjoyed each other’s company in an atmosphere of peace and harmony.
The following evening, the entire region began to tremble again. Lafo Kesar said, “O Malda Brumskid, perhaps your husband is returning home again. Please! Hide me somewhere!”
Dre Shima Rgyal’s wife replied, “Yesterday, I thought you were tired and that you were my guest, so I arranged a place to hide you. But today, do you still lack the courage to fight the giant?”
Lafo Kesar answered, “If you help me, perhaps I will fight him. Otherwise, if I am left alone, I do not have the courage to face him. Please! Hide me somewhere!”
Malda Brumskid had a large vessel in which she stored water. She usually kept it on the stones surrounding the hearth, but this time, she moved it to one side. She then dug a deep pit in which to hide Lafo Kesar, planning to place the water vessel over the pit to conceal him from her husband.
When Dre Shima Rgyal arrived home, he once again asked his wife to bring him the book. Malda Brumskid repeated the same procedure and handed the book to her husband. After examining it briefly, he said, “Lafo Kesar has crossed the forest of wood, but his progress has now been halted by a deep-water lake. Until he manages to cross this water, I will return to the desert once again, eat something, and then come back.”
The following morning, Dre Shima Rgyal set off toward the desert again. Malda Brumskid helped Lafo Kesar climb out of the pit, and the two once again spent time together in each other’s company.
The next day, the same events unfolded once more. The fortress—and indeed the entire surrounding region—began to tremble again.
Once again, Lafo Kesar said, “O Malda Brumskid, the fortress and the earth are shaking. Your husband is coming back. Please! Hide me somewhere!”
The giant’s wife replied, “I hid you yesterday and the day before. If you are so faint-hearted and cowardly, why did you come here in the first place?”
Lafo Kesar answered, “Please, if you care about me, help me! Try to find another place where I can hide. Otherwise, I will have to return to Ling Yul.”
Malda Brumskid replied, “I will not let my husband kill you. I will try to find another hiding place for you.”
She removed some of the stones around the hearth and dug another deep pit. Lafo Kesar climbed down into it, and she placed the stones back over his head to conceal him.
Dre Shima Rgyal entered his home and once again asked his wife to bring him the book.
Malda Brumskid repeated the same procedure and placed the book before her husband. Looking inside it, he said, “O my wife! The book tells me that Lafo Kesar has successfully crossed the deep water and has now reached the foot of some towering rocky cliffs. It will take him some time to cross them. Until he manages to get past these cliffs, I will return to the desert and eat some more.”
After eating, Malda Brumskid prepared her husband’s bed. When Dre Shima Rgyal lay down, she extinguished the lamp.
She placed a piece of ice on her head and then sat near the fire. The heat caused the ice to melt, and droplets began falling into the fire, producing a faint whistling sound. Malda Brumskid drew air through her mouth, making the sound resemble someone crying.
Dre Shima Rgyal asked, “O fairy! What has happened? Why are you crying?”
His wife did not answer. Instead, she continued pretending to weep. Dre Shima Rgyal asked her several times, but she remained silent.
At last, Malda Brumskid spoke.
“One day, you tell me that Lafo Kesar is crossing a forest. The next day, you say he is crossing a deep sea. On another day, you tell me that he has been delayed at the foot of a rocky mountain. What will this unfortunate woman do if he arrives here while you are away?
“That is why I am crying over my misfortune. I am afraid that if he kills you, where will I ever find another husband as wonderful as you? This thought is causing me great distress and anxiety.”
