Gilgit–Skardu Road Closure: Latest Update | Shyok Times
Gilgit–Skardu Road Closed Near Shengus Due to Landslide
SKARDU / ROUNDU, October 22, 2026: The Gilgit–Skardu Road (JSR) or Baltistan Highwat was reported completely blocked near Shengus in Roundu Valley on October 22 following a landslide that left large boulders on the roadway and continued material movement at the affected site.
According to the travel advisory issued by the District Administration / DDMA Skardu, the affected section is located at RD-52 near Shengus, Roundu Valley. As of 8:10 a.m. on October 22, material was still sliding, creating a serious safety risk for motorists and other travellers.
The advisory stated that the large boulders blocking the road could not be removed using conventional machinery. Blasting was therefore required to clear the route, and the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) was mobilizing a blasting team to carry out the operation.
Road Closure and Expected Delay
The road was declared completely closed, with the advisory warning that the closure could continue for at least another 12–18 hours from the time of the update. The actual reopening time would depend on site conditions, the completion of clearance work and the safety assessment.
Tourists, commuters and the general public were urged to avoid non-essential travel along the Gilgit–Skardu Road until further notice.
Public Safety Advisory for Travellers
The administration advised travellers already in Skardu, Gilgit or Roundu to remain at their current locations and wait for an official update.
The public has been specifically warned not to attempt to cross the landslide zone. With material reportedly continuing to slide, entering the affected section could expose travellers to falling rocks, shifting debris and further landslides.
Travellers should follow instructions from the local administration and FWO personnel and confirm the road's status before resuming their journeys.
