Kesar – Son of God, Episode 09 | Shyok Times

Chapter (Yaldaq) No.: Three

"The Birth of Kesar in Mi-Yul"

Episode Number.: 09

Lha Fu Kesar’s guide turned back and set off toward his own territory. Lha Fu Kesar, still disguised as Ghot Pamchong, continued on his way, leaving a trail of dust behind him.

When he reached the house of Thaqsukhen Nima, he greeted him, saying, “Amma, Amma!” His host returned the greeting and asked, “Where have you come from?”

Ghot Pamchong replied that he had come from the palace of “Rawatse Panak.”

That day, Thaqsukhen Nima, who also worked as a tailor, was extremely busy. He had hired around fifteen laborers to cut grass in his fields. However, there was no one available to help him with his weaving loom or to take food to the workers in the fields.

Therefore, he welcomed Ghot Pamchong and said, “My son, could you take food to the workers who are cutting grass in my fields?”

Ghot Pamchong agreed to deliver bread and meat to the workers and carried the food on his back. He had placed five or six bees, known as “Bu Bu,” inside a hollow stick and hung it above the weaving loom. He then set off toward the fields.

Whenever Thaqsukhen Nima tried to thread his loom, the loud buzzing of the bees greatly disturbed him. Eventually, he became so irritated that he struck the hollow stick hard with another stick. The hollow tube broke, and the bees flew away.

Meanwhile, Ghot Pamchong reached the fields carrying the food on his back. He called the workers and said, “Come and eat your meal.”

The workers looked at him in astonishment. They saw before them a strange and extremely ugly man whom they had never seen before.

Ghot Pamchong spread a large cloth on the ground and distributed one or two pieces of bread among them. In return, the workers gave him an equal share.

After they had finished eating, he laughed at them and said, “You have eaten an entire Chorong (a basket commonly used in Gilgit-Baltistan to carry apricots and other goods on the back) full of bread and meat, yet you still have not finished cutting the grass.”

The workers were astonished by his words and replied, “Le Mayson Chhatfa! (May you remain childless!) If you think this work is so easy, then go and do it yourself!”

Ghot Pamchong immediately began cutting the grass alone, while the others gathered the cut grass and tied it into bundles.

Soon, however, they realized that gathering and bundling the grass was even more difficult than cutting it. They therefore decided that Ghot Pamchong should make the bundles while they returned to cutting the grass.

Within moments, Ghot Pamchong had finished bundling the grass, and before long, all the grass had been cut and tied into bundles.

The workers, along with Ghot Pamchong, then returned to Thaqsukhen Nima’s house.

When they arrived, Ghot Pamchong noticed the hollow stick hanging above the loom. He realized that it had been broken and that all his bees had escaped.

Ghot Pamchong began crying loudly.

Upon hearing this, Thaqsukhen Nima became angry. He went outside, caught several bees, and handed them to Ghot Pamchong.

But Ghot Pamchong angrily replied, “These are not my bees! My bees had wings made of silk, their heads were as large as turbans, and their eyes shone like diamonds. I want my bees back!”

Hearing this, the workers said, “O Ghot Pamchong, who can bring back something that has already gone away? If you can do that, then bring back the lunch you ate.”

Ghot Pamchong then returned to each of them the food they had given him and that he had eaten.

Everyone was astonished.

Thaqsukhen Nima asked, “Why are you raising all these objections? What is it that you really want? Please tell me, and I will try to fulfill your wish.”

Ghot Pamchong replied, “Very well. If that is truly the case, can you tell me the way to Yashirat Cave?”

Thaqsukhen Nima answered, “O Ghot, what can I do? I have given you my word. I promise you that if you follow this path, you will reach Yashirat.”

Ghot Pamchong followed the route shown to him by Thaqsukhen Nima.

As he traveled along the road, he suddenly saw Habu Dongbu approaching him. Habu Dongbu was riding “Phoruq Ponpon,” wearing a Shimla belt, a new turban on his head, and Kashmiri shoes.

The two greeted each other.

Ghot Pamchong said, “Amma, Amma!”

Habu Dongbu asked, “O son, where have you come from?”

Ghot Pamchong replied, “I have come from the palace of Rawatse.”

Habu Dongbu then asked, “Where are you going?”

Ghot Pamchong answered, “I am going toward Yashirat. Fasang-kha Raskis is my father.”

Upon hearing this, Habu Dongbu thought to himself:

“Fasang-kha Raskis is the leader of us all. If people see that his son is an ugly, filthy clown, he will no longer be able to walk among the people with dignity. I must hurry and hide Fasang-kha Raskis somewhere.”

He then said to Lha Fu Kesar, “My son, I am going to leave quickly now. You can follow me slowly.”

Lha Fu Kesar replied, “Yes, Father. You are riding a horse while I am walking. I will certainly follow you slowly.”

Gathering all his strength, Habu Dongbu urged his horse forward and struck the animal three times with his whip.

The whip tore through the flesh until it reached the bone, and through the bone until it reached the marrow. Sweat covered the horse’s entire body and streamed down its legs. The horse raced like the wind.

Once Habu Dongbu disappeared from sight, Ghot Pamchong transformed the needle hidden inside his collar back into “Kyang Bo Helpa.” At the same time, he transformed himself into an even more handsome and magnificent figure than before.

He mounted his horse and raced after Habu Dongbu like lightning, quickly overtaking him.

Within moments, Habu Dongbu saw Ghot Pamchong riding ahead of him.

Habu Dongbu was astonished and thought:

“There is something strange about this boy. I drove my horse so hard that it became drenched in sweat, yet Ghot Pamchong is still ahead of me.”

He called out to Ghot Pamchong, “My son, come! Let us ride the horse together.”

But Ghot Pamchong refused and insisted on continuing to walk.

Habu Dongbu continued to insist that Ghot Pamchong ride with him. Finally, Ghot Pamchong grabbed the horse’s tail and pretended that he was trying to climb onto its back.

Habu Dongbu was astonished and exclaimed, “My son! What are you doing? You should put your foot in the stirrup and mount the horse properly.”

Ghot Pamchong replied, “Father, if you hold my hand and help me, I will climb up.”

The horse began running in circles while Ghot Pamchong held tightly to its tail.

After considerable difficulty, he finally climbed onto the horse, sitting behind Habu Dongbu but facing backward.

Habu Dongbu said, “What are you doing? Ride properly!”

Ghot Pamchong replied logically, “Father, if someone approaches us from behind, I will be able to see him. And if someone approaches us from the front, you will be able to see him.”

Then Lha Fu Kesar ordered his lice to move onto Habu Dongbu’s armor.

Habu Dongbu felt the lice crawling across his shoulders. Their tiny feet made a metallic zarap-zarap, zarap-zarap sound against his armor.

When he looked at them, they stared back at him with sharp eyes. They had pointed horns, and as they moved upward, they stood upon his shoulders.

Habu Dongbu shouted at Ghot Pamchong, “My son! Get down! Your lice are burning me—they are eating me alive! The two of us are too heavy for my horse!”

Ghot Pamchong immediately agreed and climbed down from the horse.

Habu Dongbu hurried toward Yashirat.

After some time, Lha Fu Kesar mounted his horse, Kyang Bo Helpa, once again.

A brilliant light appeared high between the heavens and the earth.

Soon afterward, Habu Dongbu once again saw Ghot Pamchong ahead of him, leaving a trail of dust and earth behind him.

Habu Dongbu called out, “My son! You always arrive before me.”

Lha Fu Kesar replied, “Father, the animal you are riding is not a horse—it is a donkey. Who would call an animal like that a horse?”

After some time, the two of them entered Yashirat together.

Fasang-kha Raskis was an extremely clever man. When he looked at Habu Dongbu and immediately understood the signal in his eyes, he quickly transformed himself into a mouse and hid in the roof.

Seeing this, Lha Fu Kesar shot an arrow at the mouse. Fasang-kha Raskis fell to the ground like a Choli (the Balti word for an apricot).

Habu Dongbu cried out, “My son! You have killed your own father!”

Lha Fu Kesar replied, “Let such a father be sacrificed for me! What kind of father was he? What kind of father turns himself into a mouse and hides when his own son comes to see him?”

Afterward, they burned the body of Fasang-kha Raskis and performed his funeral rites.

Habu Dongbu then thought that, as the spokesman for all the brothers, he would give Ghot Pamchong the best share of everything. He also decided that Ghot Pamchong should remain with him.

Five or six days later, the brothers gathered to divide their property.

Habu Dongbu said to Ghot Pamchong:

“My son, the gold collected as taxes from the villages on the right shall belong to you, and the silver collected as taxes from the valleys on the left shall also belong to you.”

Hearing this, Kharibu Khraq Thang became jealous and said:

“My son, you shall also have the authority to decide whether or not anyone may come near the hearth to warm themselves. You shall even have the authority to decide whether people may use the Chhaqsa (toilet) or not.”

Lha Fu Kesar saluted him respectfully.

In this way, Habu Dongbu gave all the valuable possessions to Ghot Pamchong and allowed him to live with him in a corner of Yashirat.

Whenever one of his father’s brothers came near the fire to warm himself, Ghot Pamchong refused to allow him to do so and beat his uncles with a strong, long stick.

He would say:

“My uncle gave this corner of the fire to me. Why should I allow you people to warm yourselves here? If you pay me tax, I will allow you to come near the fire.”

He also demanded a tax for using the toilet.

When Kharibu Khraq Thang heard this, he became extremely angry and thought:

“It is better to die than to live like this!”

With that, he washed his body with the milk of a white goat, burned incense, and inhaled its smoke. He dressed himself magnificently in a white woolen robe, a new turban, a sky-blue silk Shimla band as a Sikeraqs, and Kashmiri shoes.

He mounted his horse, “Phoruq Tingkar,” and went to the place where he sacrificed a goat before his guardian spirit.

He then went to the right valley and collected the gold tax.

Afterward, he went to the left valley and collected the silver tax.

Kharibu Khraq Thang was returning home, unaware that Ghot Pamchong was hiding somewhere farther along the road.

From a distance, Ghot Pamchong saw Kharibu Khraq Thang approaching, carrying all the gold and silver taxes in his saddlebag.

Lha Fu Kesar climbed onto a small mound and began singing:

“Wearing white woolen clothes,
You are imitating my uncle Habu Dongbu.
Wearing a white turban,
You are imitating my uncle Habu Dongbu.
Wearing the sky-blue silk Shimla band of Sikeraqs,
You are trying to imitate my uncle Kharibu Khraq Thang.
Wearing a new turban upon your head,
You are trying to imitate my uncle Khyifu Khairgud.
And riding Phoruq Tingkar,
You are trying to imitate my father, Fasang-kha Raskis.”

When Kharibu Khraq Thang came near, Lha Fu Kesar pretended not to recognize him.

Then, suddenly, he knocked him to the ground, removed his heart from his chest, and swallowed it.

Using magical powers, he then caught a Saraqpa (a chukar partridge) and transferred its heart into the empty space in Kharibu Khraq Thang’s chest.

He then released his uncle.

Before this deception, Kharibu Khraq Thang had been a very brave man. But after Lha Fu Kesar performed his magic, he became extremely cowardly.

Ghot Pamchong took all the taxes that Kharibu Khraq Thang had collected and returned to Yashirat.

Soon afterward, Habu Dongbu’s brothers held a council at Yashirat Katsa.

Some of Lha Fu Kesar’s uncles announced that there would not be enough space in Ling Yul for all of them to live and carry out their journeys. Therefore, they decided to leave Ling Yul and seek their fortunes in other places according to their destiny.

However, some uncles, including Habu Dongbu and Kharibu Khraq Thang, said:

“We cannot leave our king, Lha Fu Kesar—the Son of God—alone in Ling Yul. We will remain with him, preserve the kingdom, and maintain peace in every direction.”

Everyone agreed.

Before his brothers departed, Habu Dongbu ordered:

“Before we go to the White Mountains—the Karakoram—to spend the rest of our lives, we should work together to build a fortress worthy of our king on top of the rocks of Ling Yul. It should be constructed from white crystal stones so that it will always shine in the sunlight during the day and glow beneath the rays of the stars at night.”

Everyone agreed and began the work.

Within a few months, they built a magnificent hanging fortress of white crystal at a great height. Its brilliance could be seen from far away, and no other king in the world could possess such a heavenly fortress.

After completing the palace for Lha Fu Kesar, the Son of God, they named it “Shelkhar Dimkhar,” which in Balti means “the palace of white stones hanging among the mountains.”

On an auspicious day, all the uncles and the people of Ling Yul gathered together and held a grand feast.

Everyone was fed to their hearts’ content—even the birds of the heavens, the insects of the earth, the animals of the mountains, and the birds and fish of the rivers.

After this magnificent celebration, all the uncles escorted Lha Fu Kesar and his heavenly wife, Lahmo Berangmo, to the white palace.

They prayed for their success and offered them their best wishes before returning to their homes.

Some of the uncles left Ling Yul forever and set off toward the destinations that awaited them in the future.

To be continued…
