Kesar – Son of God, Episode 13 | Shyok Times

Chapter (Yuldak) No. 5

“Lafu Kesar’s Expedition to the North”

Episode Number.: 13

“The Land of Blue Lakes”

A giant named Dray Shima Rgyal lived in the “Land of Blue Lakes”—the name given to what is now Sichuan Province in China, along Tibet’s eastern frontier. It is known as Yungkpo Chu Yul because the region is home to several lakes whose waters possess a brilliant blue hue. In Balti, Dray refers to a giant or supernatural being.

Dray Shima Rgyal and Lafu Kesar each ruled separate territories. The two had entered into an agreement: whoever crossed into the other’s territory first would give the rightful ruler of that land the authority to kill him. In other words, if Dray Shima Rgyal entered Lafu Kesar’s territory first, the giant would have the right to devour him. Conversely, if Lafu Kesar entered the giant’s realm, he would have the right to slay the giant.

Lafu Kesar was living a life of comfort and luxury in his ancestral homeland, Ling Yul. One day, he asked his wife, Lhampo Brangmo, to bring him the Heavenly Book. As he sat looking through the book for quite some time, a sudden thought came to him: he remembered the pact he had made with the giant. A long period had passed, and perhaps Dray Shima Rgyal had already entered his territory and might kill him.

He therefore instructed Lhampo Brangmo to bring back his horse, Kyangbo Helpa, which was grazing in the mountains. Lafu Kesar had decided that he would reach the giant’s territory before the giant could enter his homeland of Ling Yul.

Lhampo Brangmo said:

“O Lafu Kesar! How unfortunate that you should ask your own wife, the Queen, to go into the mountains and fetch your horse. Do you have no servant or attendant who could bring your horse back from the mountains?”

Lafu Kesar replied:

“If I send someone else, that person may not be able to bring my horse back. That is why I am sending you, so that the horse may return peacefully with you.”

Knowing this, his wife agreed and set out toward the mountains.

As she was leaving the house, Lafu Kesar called after her:

“Please take the saddle with you, as well as this Lha Shog.”
(Lha Shog means a celestial letter; Shog is the Balti word for paper.)
“When Kyangbo Helpa sees you, he will run toward the other valley. Call him back. And if he does not come to you immediately, simply show him the Lha Shog—but do not strike him. He will come straight to you. Then you must bring him back to me with the utmost care.”

Lhampo Brangmo journeyed toward the pastures. When she arrived, she saw many horses scattered across the open fields, among them Kyangbo Helpa, quietly grazing.

From the summit of the mountain, Lhampo Brangmo called out:

“Tosho! Tosho!”
(A call used to summon an animal.)

“O Shering, the brave and obedient Kyangbo Helpa,
You have been called to return home.

Tosho! Tosho! O Kyangbo Helpa,
You have been called to return home.

Kesar, the Son of God, is setting out on a long journey,
A journey as long as an endless river.

Kesar, the Son of God, is departing on his journey,
Across the towering cliffs.”

Kyangbo Helpa suddenly stopped, raised his ears, and listened. Hearing her song, he abandoned the other horses and began moving toward the other valley.

When Lhampo Brangmo saw that Lafu Kesar’s horse was heading away from her rather than coming toward her, she held up the Lha Shog and said:

“If I cast this Lha Shog,
Without a doubt, it will strike you.”

The moment Kyangbo Helpa saw the Lha Shog in Lhampo Brangmo’s hand, he lowered his head and came directly toward her.

When he reached her, Lhampo Brangmo secretly formed a wish in her heart:

“When I cast the saddle onto the horse’s back, if it lands facing the proper direction, Lafu Kesar will have only a short journey to make. But if it settles in the wrong direction, his journey will be a very long one.”

With this wish in her heart, she threw the saddle toward the horse’s back—and it settled in the wrong direction. This sign meant that Lafu Kesar would have to undertake a very long journey.

Then Lhampo Brangmo made another wish:

“If the bridle settles properly in Kyangbo Helpa’s mouth, Lafu Kesar will return alive. But if the bridle settles incorrectly, it will mean that Lafu Kesar will die and never return to Ling Yul.”

With this wish, she cast the bridle toward the horse’s mouth. It settled perfectly into place.

Lhampo Brangmo naturally took this as a good omen and thought:

“Lafu Kesar will return alive from his long journey.”

Then, with considerable cunning, Lhampo Brangmo leapt onto the horse’s back and seated herself in the saddle.

At that very moment, the horse spoke:

“O Queen! I have never even allowed the shadow of a flying bird to fall upon my back. Only Kesar—the Son of God—is worthy of riding me. Why have you mounted me? I will crush you!”

With these words, Kyangbo Helpa soared into the sky. As he rose toward the heavens, intending to crush her, Lhampo Brangmo slipped down against the horse’s side.

Then he flew toward the mountains, intending to crush her against the rocky cliffs with the side of his body. But as Kyangbo Helpa approached the mountain, Lhampo Brangmo slipped underneath him, toward his belly.

The horse then plunged rapidly toward the ground. Yet, just as they neared the earth, Lhampo Brangmo swiftly sprang back into the saddle.

She then struck Kyangbo Helpa firmly with the whip three times.

The horse grew weak, his ears drooped, and, abandoning his fierce resistance, he adopted a gentle pace and began making his way toward Lafu Kesar’s palace.

From the window of his palace, Lafu Kesar saw his Queen returning with the horse.

She tied the horse to a hitching post and then came before Lafu Kesar...

(To be continued)

The remaining events of Lafu Kesar’s extraordinary tale, veiled in wonder and suspense, will unfold in the next episode.
