Trump Xi summit talks are taking place in Washington as U.S. President Donald Trump hosts Chinese President Xi Jinping for a three-day state visit focused on trade, artificial intelligence, technology and broader U.S.-China relations.

Xi arrived in the United States on September 23 for his first state visit to the country in 11 years. China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the visit runs from September 23 to 25 at Trump’s invitation.

The meeting comes as Washington and Beijing continue to compete over technology, advanced semiconductors, artificial intelligence and critical supply chains. At the same time, both governments have been discussing ways to prevent economic and strategic tensions from escalating.

AI Becomes a Major Issue

Artificial intelligence is expected to feature prominently in the Trump Xi summit. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington had proposed a mechanism for the two countries to notify each other about serious AI incidents, including incidents with potential national-security implications.

However, major differences remain over access to advanced AI chips and semiconductor technology. Washington has maintained restrictions on some advanced technologies reaching China, while Beijing has pushed for greater access and continued development of its domestic technology sector.

China’s technology industry has also continued developing domestic AI chips and models. Alibaba recently announced a new AI chip and plans for a much larger AI model, illustrating Beijing’s broader effort to strengthen domestic technological capabilities.

Trade and Self-Reliance

Trade remains another central issue. The two countries have maintained a fragile trade truce while continuing negotiations over tariffs, rare-earth supplies and market access.

China’s growing emphasis on self-reliance has changed the economic calculations surrounding U.S. trade restrictions. Chinese companies have expanded domestic capabilities in areas including semiconductors, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing, reducing dependence on some foreign technologies.

The wider global economy remains closely connected to China, particularly through manufacturing and supply chains. That makes the outcome of the talks relevant beyond Washington and Beijing.

Taiwan and Wider Security Issues

Taiwan is also expected to feature in discussions. Beijing continues to regard Taiwan as a core sovereignty issue, while Washington maintains extensive unofficial relations with Taipei and supplies defensive equipment.

Iran and energy security may also enter the discussions as the two countries navigate wider geopolitical tensions.

The White House has prepared a high-level program for Xi’s visit, including a formal welcome and state dinner. Trump is also scheduled to personally greet Xi at Joint Base Andrews, an unusual protocol gesture for a visiting foreign leader.

The Trump Xi summit therefore brings together economic, technological and geopolitical issues that remain unresolved between the world’s two largest economies. The immediate focus is expected to be on managing differences, maintaining dialogue and identifying areas where limited cooperation may be possible.
