Man Rescued After Being Trapped In Snow For Hours Near K2 In Askole
ASKOLE, Shigar District — A man was rescued after spending nearly three hours trapped in deep snow in the high-altitude terrain near Askole, the last inhabited village on the trail to K2 in Gilgit-Baltistan's Shigar District.
According to reports, the individual was part of a group travelling in the area to experience the recent snowfall. The incident occurred when he and another member of the party ventured ahead of the main group. While navigating the snow-covered route, he reportedly slipped and became stranded in the heavy snow.
After realising he was trapped, the remaining members of the group launched a rescue effort and successfully pulled him out to safety using a rope. Due to prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures and deep snow, the rescued traveller experienced severe numbness throughout his body.
Askole, located in the remote upper reaches of the Shigar Valley, serves as the primary gateway and base point for trekking and mountaineering expeditions heading towards K2, Broad Peak, and the Concordia region in the Karakorum range. Local authorities and experienced guides frequently advise travelers to exercise extreme caution, as the high-altitude environment, sudden weather shifts, and treacherous snow-covered trails pose significant hazards, especially to visitors unfamiliar with rugged mountain conditions.
