Ronaldo Suspended: 6-Month Ban Threat Rocks Portugal

Ronaldo suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after walking out of the national team camp. The federation has opened an urgent disciplinary case against the 41-year-old captain.

What the FPF Said

The FPF confirmed the provisional suspension was issued on 9 October and classified the case as “urgent.” The federation will keep details confidential until the process ends. The case now goes to its disciplinary investigation committee, which will decide whether Ronaldo broke the rules by leaving camp without justification.

Under FPF regulations, a player who walks out on national team duty faces a ban of one to six months, plus a fine. Portuguese media report the fine could reach €1,000.

Why Ronaldo Left the Camp

Ronaldo left the squad after being an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League win away to Norway on 27 September. He then learned he would not start against Denmark. In a near 2,000-word statement, he accused coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice and called it an “absolute breach of trust.”

Ronaldo said Jesus had agreed to make eight points in a press conference but did not. One was that it was a mistake to warm up a player “of the stature of Pelé or Maradona” and not use him. Jesus, 72, declined to respond directly. He said he would keep working “to think about the Portuguese national team.”

Ronaldo Apologises and Accepts Punishment

Ronaldo apologised to his team-mates and fans and said his actions deserve punishment. He also confirmed he will not retire from international football. He said he would be available once any sanction is served, as he chases 1,000 career goals.

FPF president Pedro Proença told Record the federation wants its captain back. “There will be a normal disciplinary process,” he said. He added that “this is a time for calm and composure.”

Record-Breaking Numbers at Stake

Ronaldo holds the men’s international records for goals (146) and appearances (234). The five-time Ballon d’Or winner helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles. He returned to club action for Al-Nassr and scored his 980th career goal in a 3-0 win over Diriyah.

What Happens Next

Portugal have already qualified for the Nations League quarter-finals after winning all four group games, according to UEFA. They host Denmark on 14 November and face Wales three days later. A ban of up to six months could rule Ronaldo out of both matches and further fixtures.

With Ronaldo suspended and the case marked urgent, a final ruling is expected to shape the captain’s future with Portugal. Read more in our sports coverage and our latest football news.
