Lafo Kesar’s Northern Adventure – Episode 14 | Shyok Times

Chapter (Yuldak) No. 5

“Lafu Kesar’s Expedition to the North”

Episode Number.: 14

Lafo Kesar watched the scene from the palace window. Lhamo Brongmo brought the horse back, tied it to its post, and then came before Lafo Kesar.

Lafo Kesar took some fresh, turquoise-blue grass and tried to feed it to Kyangbo Helpa, but the horse became angry and refused to eat. Lafo Kesar asked, “What is the matter? Who has made you angry? Has Lhamo Brongmo treated you badly? There is no difference between Lhamo Brongmo and me. She is part of my life; she is my queen. You should not be upset simply because I sent my life partner to bring you back.”

Lafo Kesar managed to calm the horse. Kyangbo Helpa then ate the grass and drank some water.

A little later, Lafo Kesar said to Lhamo Brongmo, “You should prepare some delicious food that is light to carry and replenishes itself after being eaten, because I must set out for the land of Dre Shima Rgyal.”

She prepared a fine meal and presented it to him. Lafo Kesar took the food, stood up, and said, “Lhamo Brongmo, I am leaving now.”

His wife replied, “If you are leaving, I will accompany you a little way so that I can see you off.”

She walked with him for a short distance before bidding him farewell. She then announced that she would return home while he continued his journey. Lafo Kesar would not allow her to return home alone, so he accompanied her back to the palace, said goodbye, and set off again.

Once more, Lhamo Brongmo decided to walk a little way with him to see him off. Again, Lafo Kesar escorted her back home.

For seven days, the husband and wife repeated this same ritual. They would walk together for a short distance, part ways, and then Lafo Kesar would accompany his wife back home. Lhamo Brongmo would once again walk a little way with him to bid him farewell. In this manner, they enjoyed spending time together, even though they appeared to be wasting precious time.

Lafo Kesar’s guardian goddess, Aine Karmanmo, thought to herself, “What is this son of a bad mother doing? If he continues like this, he will never be able to leave his wife behind.”

Aine Karmanmo was the protective deity associated with Lafo Kesar, whom he affectionately addressed as his aunt.

The next time the couple left home, Aine Karmanmo placed a celestial partridge in Lafo Kesar’s path. Lafo Kesar was an excellent hunter. He took out his bow and arrow, aimed at the bird, and broke one of its wings.

He dismounted from his horse and prepared to kill the partridge, but the bird fled, dragging its broken wing behind it. To catch the bird, Lafo Kesar had to resort to magic. He blew on his horse, transforming it into a needle, which he concealed behind his collar. He then set off in pursuit of the partridge.

He travelled a considerable distance trying to catch the wounded bird. In doing so, he finally broke the time-consuming cycle of repeatedly leaving and returning that he and his wife had maintained over the previous several days.

Then his guardian goddess appeared before him and said, “O Lafo Kesar! At last, you have arrived here.”

Lafo Kesar replied, “I was chasing a partridge, and that pursuit brought me here.”

Aine Karmanmo said, “In truth, it was not an ordinary partridge. You seemed unable to leave your wife, so I decided to play a trick on you. Now you have finally set out on your journey.”

Thus, following the guidance of his guardian goddess, Lafo Kesar continued towards the land of Dre Shima Rgyal.

When he reached a place where fresh spring water flowed, he put some flour into a bowl and placed it directly beneath a waterfall. However, the force of the water washed all the flour out of the bowl.

Seeing this, Lafo Kesar began to tremble with fear. He sat down on a high rock. Nearby grew a cluster of reeds, which made a whistling sound whenever the wind blew through them.

Lafo Kesar was already frightened by the eerie whistling of the reeds. He then noticed the wind blowing goat droppings from one place to another. The droppings bounced about and seemed to run across the ground. Witnessing this strange sight made him even more terrified.

In his frightened state, Lafo Kesar addressed his guardian goddess:

“O my aunt, Aine Karmanmo,

Please take me away from here!

This water, which has no mouth,

Has swallowed all my flour.

This Son of God is frightened;

I fear that I may fall into trouble.

This dung, which has no legs,

Is jumping and running about.

I, the Son of God, am afraid

Of this jumping, running dung.

O my aunt, please take me away from here!

These slabs of stone, which have no wings,

Are coming down from the mountains.

The Son of God is frightened of them.

O my aunt, please take me away from here!

These reeds, which have no mouths,

Are whistling loudly.

The Son of God is frightened of them!

O my aunt, please take me away from here!”

His guardian goddess replied, “O son of a bad mother! These are lifeless things. When the wind passes through the reeds, it produces a whistling sound. The dung bounces and moves because of the wind.

“There is a saying among the mountain people: when the earth’s soil enters the hollows of the mountains, it breaks into slabs of stone, and those slabs then tumble down the mountainsides.

“Why are you afraid of such things? You should not have placed your bowl of flour directly beneath the waterfall. Instead, you should have collected the water with your hands and poured it into the bowl containing the flour. Had you done so, you would have had something to eat.”

Lafo Kesar followed her advice. He gathered water in his hands, added it to the flour, and kneaded the mixture into dough. After eating some of it, he resumed his journey.

Accompanied by his guardian goddess, he travelled across vast distances, through mountains and valleys and throughout the length and breadth of the land. They crossed the high and low hills of Arathing Krathing, forests and thickets, plains and deserts, rough and smooth rocky paths, steep ascents and descending slopes, passing through approximately one hundred and one different places.

At last, they reached a vast desert. There, they saw an enormous army approaching them—so vast that its numbers could not be counted.

Lafo Kesar cried out to his guardian goddess, “I can see the army of the Broqpa approaching! These mountain people are known for being rough and wild. The Son of God is frightened. O my aunt, save me! Protect me from them!”
